FLO Programme celebrates World Suicide Prevention Day

September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD). This year the theme is ‘Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving lives’.  WSPD is an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

This year’s theme encourages us all to consider the act of offering support to someone in need and how it may play a part in combating suicide. The simple act of showing ‘alofa’ for those in our community that may be vulnerable to suicide can make all the difference.

Our FLO Suicide Prevention Ambassadors, Te Rau Matatini and Pasifika community leaders have translated this year’s theme into the following languages for Pasifika communities in New Zealand:

English: Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives

Join us, and others around the globe who are working towards the common goal of preventing suicide and support World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. Le Va will be launching a new suicide prevention resource on the same day that you can share with your friends and family.

You can also be supportive by checking in on someone you may be concerned about, listening to what they say, how they say it and showing them kindness and support. More Le Va resources that may assist you with these conversations are the Help Give Hope wallet card and poster and the Preventing Suicide for Pasifika – Top 5 Tactics.

For more information on the IASP World Suicide Prevention Day check out the International Association for Suicide Prevention website and Facebook page.
