Suicide Prevention Resources available for our Pasifika communities

As a connected community, with the right information, everyone has a part to play and we can all help to prevent suicide. #HelpGiveHope #FLO

Understanding Pasifika suicide prevention means empowering communities to seek and use solutions that work for them. From community consultation nationwide, our communities have expressed the need for appropriate and relevant Pasifika suicide prevention resources.

With our communities guiding and telling us what works best, Le Va has begun responding to this need by creating a suite of free online resources people and organisations can download and use to promote hope to individuals, families and communities.

Here’s a bit of information about the resources we currently have, and a link to their location on our website so that you can check them out yourself and start downloading and using them.

FLO: Pasifika for Life – Pasifika community perspectives on suicide prevention in NZ is a report that describes the themes and results from 15 FLO Programme community meetings throughout the country with approximately 400 Pasifika participants.

Strengthening Solutions for Pasifika Rainbow is the key note speech presented by Phylesha Brown-Acton at GPS 2.0 Growing Pacific Solutions for our communities’ National conference, March 2014.

Depression factsheets give insight into the signs of depression and how one can find help. These are available in English, Samoan, Tongan and Cook Island Maori.

The Help Give Hope Wallet card and A3 poster provide information around both the risk and protective factors of suicide.  They cover the warning signs to look out for and ways to get help. The A3 wall poster can be displayed in your staff room or information board.

Calling on evidence-based research and best practice, the Preventing Suicide for Pasifika – Top 5 Tactics booklet brings to life tactics such as Talking, Culture, Connecting, Strengthening Family and Spirituality to help our Pasifika families and communities flourish.

The handy Grow your FLO pocket card provides a list of contact details and useful websites for organisations and services that can help you or someone you know. You can download the pdf, print out the card, and pop it in your back pocket, wallet or purse – you never know when you might need it.
