Buccilea’s journey into leadership began quietly, in the gentle interactions between parents and their children, and in the delicate work of nurturing wellbeing before words are even spoken.
As a Registered Nurse in the Infant Mental Health team at Te Whatu Ora, Buccilea supports Pacific families through culturally responsive care, helping parents and infants heal together.
Her approach is grounded in relationship-based practice, listening deeply, building trust and understanding that culture is at the heart of healing.
“For me, leadership is about standing in the gap between generations,” she says. “It’s about carrying the stories of our people and making sure they’re not forgotten.”
In her role, Buccilea sees first-hand the intergenerational effects of trauma and disconnection. Her work, and her calling, is to help Pacific families reconnect with their cultural strengths, values and sense of belonging.
“Sometimes identity feels twisted or misunderstood,” she shares. “But still we rise, we stitch together the beauty that others tried to unthread.”
Through Le Va’s Le Tautua Pasifika leadership programme, Buccilea found affirmation and community among other Pasifika leaders. The experience gave her the confidence to step forward, not just as a clinician, but as an advocate and cultural voice within the health system.
“I’m learning that leadership doesn’t mean having all the answers. It’s about standing firm, even when the ground feels unsteady.”
Her hope for the future is simple but profound: that Pacific children will grow up in a world where their culture and identity are seen as strengths, not barriers.
“I hope I am enough,” she reflects. “Enough to carry their stories. Enough to build bridges where walls once stood.”
Buccilea walks boldly in the footsteps of her ancestors, guided by compassion, love and remembrance – a leader of both heart and healing.
