
Pelea Fruean

Pelea Fruean, born in 2000 in South Auckland, a distinguished New Zealand amateur boxer of Samoan descent, with proud family roots in Lotofaga Aleipata and Moto’otua Apia. She has made significant strides in the lightweight division and was recognised as one of New Zealand’s rising stars in amateur women’s boxing.
A two-time national champion and Golden Gloves winner, Fruean represented New Zealand at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, where she won a bronze medal. She also competed at the Youth World Boxing Championships in both 2017 and 2018, reaching the top 16 in both tournaments.
Known by the nickname “The Phoenix,” Fruean has been recognised for her dedication, talent, and resilience in the ring. Beyond boxing, Fruean’s love for community work stems from her close-knit family upbringing, where she was raised with strong Samoan values of tautua (service) and faith. These principles have shaped her commitment to advocating for social issues, particularly among young people.
Fruean works as a coach, using her platform to uplift community well-being through health and fitness. Her multifaceted contributions continue to inspire many within and and beyond the boxing community.
