Her Honour Judge Ida Malosi
Principal Family Court Judge
Her Honour Judge Ida Malosi is the Principal Youth Court Judge of the District Court of New Zealand.
Born in New Zealand to Samoan parents who migrated to their new homeland in the 1950s, Judge Malosi’s career in the law began at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History (1985) and Bachelor of Laws (1989).
Five years later, she co-founded an all Māori and Pasifika women legal practice in South Auckland – King Alofivae Malosi (‘KAM’) – which specialised in youth justice and care and protection.
In 2002, Judge Malosi was appointed to the District Court with a Family Court warrant, marking the first appointment of a Pasifika woman to the bench in New Zealand.
In November 2022, she became the first woman to lead the Youth Court and the first Pasifika person to hold a head of bench role within the New Zealand judiciary.
