Fatima Akehurst

Primary Service Provider, Blind Low Vision

Fatima was born in Tonga in a beautiful Island of Vava’u.  

Fatima came to New Zealand when she was 23 years old, seeking medical treatment for her eye condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa RP. Unfortunately, there was no cure or treatment. She has been learning new skills every day to cope with her vision loss. She manages to live an independent life with no limitations.  

Fatima studied Nursing and Psychology at the University of Auckland and worked as  nurse for three years. 

Fatima worked as an Interpreter for the Court, Health, Custom and Police Department for 20 years. 

Fatima is currently at the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind (Blind, Deafblind and Low Vision) and has worked here for over 20 years.

Fatima’s roles in the Disability Sector: 

  • Member of Lui Ora – 15 + years 
  • Member of Faiva Ora Leadership Group 15 + years  
  • Founder of the Blind Low Vision Pacific Peer Support Group.  
  • Role at the RNZFB is National Pacific Services Coordinator and Primary Service Provider. (20 years) 
  • Community Disability Awareness Program with the Churches, Pacific radio and Pacific Communities.  

Fatima says, “I may have lost my sight but I am blessed with a great vision.”
