Le Va Mental Health and Addiction Scholarships

Purpose
The purpose of the scholarships is to develop a more skilled Pacific mental health workforce, have a supported and sustainable Pacific mental health workforce and increase the number of Pacific people's mental health workers.

Eligibility
These scholarships aim to support Pacific students studying towards a mental health or related qualification. Applicants should be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and be a student enrolled at a New Zealand institution.

Careerforce National Mental Health Support Workers Training Grant

Purpose
The purpose of the grant is to assist students with their tuition fees towards the National Certificate in Mental Health Support Work (Level 4) or the National Diploma in Mental Health Support Work (Level 6).

Eligibility
To qualify for the grant the trainee must:

  • be enrolled by an NZQA accredited Tertiary Education Organisation in the National Certificate in Mental Health (Mental Health Support Work) (Level 4) or the National Diploma in Mental Health (Mental Health Support Work) (Level 6)
  • be employed (paid or volunteer) in a mental health service funded by a District Health Board/Ministry of Health
  • be in a role that is relevant to mental health support work
  • have an employer who is supportive of their application for a training grant
  • not have their tuition fees paid by other benefits or other scholarships (excluding student loans)
  • be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident and provide photocopied evidence.

Please note that where employers have funded training, employees are able to apply for the grant (if other criteria are met) and nominate that their employer receives the grant in reimbursement.

AUT Pacific Islands Families Study Postgraduate Scholarship

Closing date
Friday, 26 November 2010.

Purpose
Available within the Pacific Islands Families (PIF) longitudinal cohort study to a successful Pasifika Master of Health Science or Master of Philosophy applicant at AUT.

Eligibility
Applicants should be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and be of Pacific Island descent. The Scholarship is open to applicants within the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences at AUT undertaking either a Master of Philosophy or Master of Health Science programme.

RWNZ/Access Homehealth Bursary

Closing date
Thursday, 1 July 2010.

Purpose
A grant for a health care worker who wishes to further their studies in the health and/or disability fields, with a particular focus on the provision of services to the rural sector.

Eligibility
Any person meeting the criteria who is a New Zealand citizen is eligible to apply for this bursary.

  • Study/Course relates to health.
  • An interest in the rural community.
  • Future career prospects in rural health services.
  • Number of years in the health industry.
  • Commitment to study.
  • Study/course must be from an approved polytechnic or university.
  • Application form criteria adhered to, with all supporting data.

Cancer Society of NZ Grants-in-Aid

Sunday, 14 November 2010.

Purpose
A grant-in-aid is an award for a particular purpose designed to further the objects of the Society, but not within the categories of a project grant or one of the other types of grants.

Eligibility
Open to NZ citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand who are eligible for registration as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at a New Zealand university. Dr Newton Wickham CBE Elective Scholarship In Pacific Island Health

Wednesday, 1 September 2010.

Purpose
The main purpose of the Scholarship is to assist final year medical students undertaking an elective that focuses on Pacific Island health.

Eligibility
The Scholarship will be open to students of The University of Auckland enrolled and who have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for studying Part V of the programme for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. The Scholarship will be available for electives undertaken in a Pacific Island or in New Zealand when the field of study is Pacific Island Health.

HRC Pacific Health Research Summer Studentship

Wednesday, 1 September 2010.

Purpose
These awards aim to introduce research to Pacific students wanting to develop research skills with supervision and guidance from experienced senior researchers. This provides an opportunity to develop a career in health research by working on a 10-week project over the summer break.

Eligibility
Applicants should be of Pacific Island descent and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. Generally applicants are enrolled at an undergraduate level at a New Zealand university. Selection will be based on the potential of the student to have a career with a significant involvement in Pacific in Pacific Health research and the quality of their intended supervision. HRC Disability Research Placement Programme Awards

Tuesday, 1 September 2009.

Purpose
There are two categories of Awards available, Masters Research Awards and PhD Research Awards. These are for students needing a research team, for teams needing a student and for students that have a supervisor and research team.

Eligibility
The awards are available to full-time students (or part-time students with special circumstances) with funding and terms commensurate with similar awards offered by the Health Research Council. Maori and Pacific people are particularly encouraged to apply. All student applicants for these awards must must complete the Disability Research Placement Programme form by the due date. Students that have not organised a supervisor and (where relevant) a research team themsevles must also complete form DPS and submit to HRC by the due date. Also research teams wishing to offer a placement for a student should complete form DPT and submit to HRC by the due date. These forms are available from the HRC Website.

Pacific Health Research Masters Award

Purpose
Masters scholarships are intended to provide one year of personal support for students completing the research component of a Master's degree. Building human resource capacity in Pacific health research is a priority for the Health Research Council.

Eligibility
Applicants should be New Zealand citizens or hold residency in NZ at the time of application AND be of Pacific Island descent. Usually successful applicants will be enrolled fulltime for a Masters degree. The HRC will however consider other applications from students enrolled part-time on their individual merit. The Pacific Health Research Masters scholarship will not be granted for a period longer than the equivalent of one year fulltime, or a maximum of two years part time. Students must be enrolled at a New Zealand University or another approved New Zealand tertiary institution. Pacific Health Research Postdoctoral Fellowship

Purpose
This Fellowship provides support for outstanding graduates who have recently completed a degree at doctoral level and who propose to conduct research in any discipline related to improving the health of Pacific people.

Eligibility
Applicants should be of Pacific Island descent and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. Generally, graduate students should be eligible to be enrolled full-time in an approved course of research training leading to a higher degree in a New Zealand university. University of Auckland Chancellor's Awards

The University of Auckland Chancellor’s Awards for Top Maaori and Pacific Scholars recognises and rewards the academic achievement, cultural involvement, all-round ability and leadership potential of Maaori and Pacific students from New Zealand secondary schools. Recipients are offered mentoring and financial support to help them participate successfully in tertiary study at The University of Auckland.

University of Auckland Jubilee Award (school leavers)

The University of Auckland Jubilee Award is for students, who display academic merit, potential to succeed in tertiary study and have a need for financial assistance.

University of Auckland Maaori and Pacific Admission Schene (MAPAS)

In addition to scholarships, The Medical and Health Sciences Faculty at the University of Auckland have a Maaori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MAPAS). This provides entry for Maaori and Pacific students to study Pharmacy (BPharm), Medicine (MBChB), Nursing (BNurs), Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) and the Certificate in Health Sciences (CertHSc).

AUT Occupational Therapy Scholarship

The Occupational Therapy Scholarship provides financial assistance to individuals who wish to enrol or re-enrol in the BHSc (Occupational Therapy) at AUT. The scholarship is only for individuals who are Maaori, Pacific, Male or disabled. 

University of Otago Maaori and Pacific Island Entrance Scholarships

The University Of Otago Maaori and Pacific Island Entrance Scholarships encourage Maaori and Pacific students to take up tertiary study. Up to 30 scholarships are awarded each year.

South Auckland Health Foundation Scholarships

The health scholarship programme is a partnership between the South Auckland Health Foundation and Counties Manukau DHB to support local students wanting to study health. The scholarships are for one year and are up to $5000 for tuition fees only. A number of scholarships are awarded each year and the key criteria for these scholarships relate to academic achievement, community involvement and financial hardship.

Pacific Islands Polynesian Education Foundation

On behalf of the Ministry of Education, the Pacific Islands Polynesian Education Foundation promotes and encourages the better education of Polynesians and provides financial assistance for Polynesian people undertaking tertiary study in New Zealand.
