2009 Scholarship recipients

On Friday, 20 February, 27 Pacific people were given the means to undertake further study and develop their careers in the New Zealand mental health and addiction sector. The day was a scene of much exciting activity for Le Va! We met with our Pacific Reference Group, Le Leo o Le Va, ran a scholarship recipient workshop and hosted an awards dinner where we presented the scholarships.

Recipient's workshop

These people have attended a one-day workshop that covered the requirements of the scholarhips, their responsibilities as scholarship recipients and what supports are available to them during their studies. The workshop included presentations by Le Va and the Ministries of Education and Health. Participants were each given a satchel full of useful information and items to assist them during their studies.

Awards dinner

The awards dinner was also a great success! Many community and sector leaders attended including our newest Pacific Member of Parliament, Peseta Sam Lotu-Liga; the CEO of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Dr Collin Tukuitonga; and our Chief Advisor Pacific Health, Dr Api Talemaitoga.

We also launched the Le Va sponsored edition of the Pacific Health Dialog Journal exclusively on Pacific mental health and addictions. Read more about the Journal on our Knowledge Waves webpage. Another highlight was the launch video produced by Le Va called "tha hook", our youth-oriented texting promotion. Read more about the "the hook" and how we're working with Pacific youth on our Matutaki webpage.
