Le Va is the Pacific mental health workforce development unit within Te Pou. Our vision is clear - vibrant Pacific leadership and well Pacific families.

We will strive to improve the mental health and well being of Pacific people through progressing the delivery of effective health services from a clinically and culturally competent Pacific workforce.

Our work will contribute to the Ministry of Health's vision outlined in Te Tahuhu: Improving Mental Health 2005-2015, Tauawhitia te Wero: National Mental Health and Addiction Workforce Development Plan 2006-2009 and Te Kokiri:
Mental Health and Addictions Plan 2006-2015.

Evolving leaders alumni workshop Graduates of Le Va's Le Tautua Emerging Leaders programme were welcomed back to take part in a leadership workshop, featuring two leading experts in the field of executive management and business from the Auckland University Business School. Dr. Ron McDowall and Peter Withers, and cultural advisor Fa’amatuainu Tino Pereira presented to the 28 alumni in a highly successful two-day event.
   
Johnny Siaosi Seiuli Papali’i Johnny Siaosi, consumer advisor and Matua at Takanga a Fohe Services, Waitemata DHB, is featured in Le Va's Fakatu'amelie - showcasing Pacific innovations. The first Pacific consumer advisor working full-time for a DHB in the country, Seiuli Papali'i Johnny Siaose led the project team that produced the highly successful inaugural national Pacific consumer and family recovery conference.
   
Kato Fetu is a research agenda summary. It identifies priorities for mental health and addiction research for New Zealand's Pacific popuation to be implemented in the next one to five years. Read more about Kato Fetu and download a copy from our research web pages.
   
The Fakatu'amelie funded inaugural National Pacific Consumer and Family Recovery Conference was held on 7-8 May in Auckland. Read about this highly successful event which also included the launch of the four regional and national vaka (taonga) and forums, Music to Metaphor II CD, and Real Skills plus Seitapu launch.
   
Pacific Mental Health and Addictions Le Va is honoured to sponsor this Pacific Mental Health and Addictions edition of the Pacific Health Dialog Journal (PDF, 2.3MB). Each of the papers in this edition represents a thread woven together making up this unique edition of the PHD Journal. The result is a collectively threaded and woven ‘ie toga or fine mat, that we humbly present to you, the people, community and sector that we serve.
   
Real Skills Plus Seitapu (PDF, 614KB) contains a framework developed to support the entire mental health and addiction workforce. It presents the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude required for working with Pacific people. A hard copy of Real Skills Plus Seitapu is available on request. For more information, see our Seitapu webpage.
   
The evaluation report for this year's round of Le Va Drua fono is available for download (PDF, 5.1MB). More than 100 people participated in the fono, held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, with the overwhelming majority declaring the series a success and supporting its continuation in the future.
   
The Music to Metaphor II CD, A unison of oars - Takanga a Fohe, has been released and individual tracks are available for download. A limited number of CDs are also available on request.
