About the programme
Malologa Trust of Auckland will publish and widely distribute the Popao Pacific Recovery and Strengths-based Model.
Background
The word Popao means out-rigger canoe. This conceptual model uses the Popao as a metaphor, from a Pacific paradigm, of service users and professionals shared understanding of the treatment process as a 'journey' towards recovery and strength.
The model was developed collaboratively by the 'Popao Group' and a number of key stakeholders in the Pacific sector including service users, community support workers, Matua, clinicians and service providers, but particularly Isa Lei - Pacific Mental Health and Addictions Services.
The Popao Model began its development in 2005 and it was officially launched in August, 2007.
What the evaluation panel said
Evaluation panel chair, Dr Monique Faleafa, said the Popao Model's Pacific consumer focus and Pacific concept to denote the journey towards recovery and strength was seen by the panel as innovative. A key strength of this application is that the Model had received wide-reaching consultation and was presented locally and internationally at the 2007 TheMHS Conference in Sydney, Australia. "With the help of this grant, the Popao Model will be published for the first time."
What Malologa Trust said
Malologa Trust manager, Mr Manu Fotu, said "the Fakatu'amelie Innovation Fund has enabled the Popao Model to be more useful for the sector. We are very happy with this outcome and hope that the Popao Model will continue to contribute to positive outcomes for the Pacific sector and service users."
