Welcome
We are coming into our second year of implementing Faiva Ora - National Pasifika Disability Plan 2010-2013. We have established strong relationships and worked alongside providers, Pacific peoples with disabilities, their families and carers, to ensure that:
Pacific peoples with disabilities can live in their home and take part in their community in the same way other New Zealanders do.
The impact of this work has included:
- a more informed Pacific disability community through the development and distribution of Disability Support Service guides in five Pacific languages
- expert Pacific input into the Ministry of Health's disability support services priority projects by the Faiva Ora National Leadership Group
- supporting mainstream services to respond more effectively to the needs of Pacific people through cultural competency training
- an increase in Pacific people working in the disability sector undertaking professional development training through Disability Workforce Development grant funding.
You can download a factsheet on Pacific disability grant funding which summarises information about grant recipients to July 2011.
Supporting frontline workers to engage effectively with Pacific people is an important enabler to increasing Pacific peoples' access rates to disability support services.
Our priority work areas for the coming year will include regional and national initiatives that further support Faiva Ora.
We are developing an Engaging Pasifika training workshop for the disability sector, in consultation with the Faiva Ora National Leadership Group and the disability sector. The GPS 2012 national fono will be an opportunity for the wider health sector to find out more about this work.
Working alongside Disability Workforce Development, we will continue to profile and share best and promising practice, and continuing to grow the capacity and capability of the Pacific disability workforce and leaders to facilitate access to training and support resources.
